Program Description

The soil lab analyzes about 14,000 soil and plant samples annually, from homeowners to community gardeners to farmers. The program aims to provide environmentally sustainable fertilizer recommendations to minimize soil/water pollution and educate users on best fertilizer practices. Lab manager teaches Master Gardeners in CT, MA, and RI about soils, assists with NRCS Envirothon, UConn NRCA, and CNLA Accreditation Program, plus other outreach like the Grow Your Way series offered by HR.

The Center responds to up to 4000 requests (before COVID-19) for information on gardening, pest control, household pests, and other topics of interest to CT residents and beyond. The program posts a weekly horticultural blog, weekly newspaper articles, and a monthly free e-newsletter. It also has a website with about 100 horticultural fact sheets. The program also has a booth at the annual CT Flower Show in Hartford, where members answer visitors’ horticultural questions and team up with the soil lab, which offers free pH testing. Master Gardeners also volunteer to staff our booth. Talks are often given to garden clubs and other organizations, and staff participate in Bug Week/Month.
