Program Description

The Avery Point Astronomy class (PHYS 1020) and the Tames Amateur Astronomical Society (TAAS) invites members of UConn, their guests and individual citizen, to three nights of star gazing during the Fall semester, on the southwest corner of the campus lawn. This program sets up one UConn Celestron telescope, purchased with a grant from Dean Teitelbaum in 2015, plus three to five telescopes of members of the TAAS. The aim is to inspire inquisitive minds about celestial marvels and educate them about our solar system and the cosmos. A typical observation night includes between 20 to 50 people, a mixture of UConn students and staff and private citizens from nearby towns in the southeast corner of Connecticut. The program aims particular attention to young souls, as young as five years old, that join the observation with their parents, for a family fun night of star gazing.
