9. The section data has been saved, now select “Start Workflow.”

If you are adding a Course or Section Attribute after the CLSS validation, in ‘refine mode, it will trigger a workflow to have the request to add it approved.

That will look something like this:

Please note that other sections of the same course will not automatically have the attribute; you will need to add it to each section individually by following the same steps listed above

Please note that this process must be done each semester

Service-Learning Courses Require Approval

Service-Learning courses require approval by the Office of Outreach and Engagement. If this is the first time you have requested the Service-Learning designation for this course/section, please note that the deadline to submit the request is February 1st for the Fall semester and September 1st for the Spring semester. Instructors that have previously received Service-Learning designation approval can submit it at any time. Please send your questions to engagement@uconn.edu

What Happens Next:

Your submission will be shared with our Service-Learning Committee (make this a link to the list of those who currently serve), where your course will be assessed according to the following requirements:

  • Partnership- and course-project-related goals and objectives agreed upon with your community partner(s)
  • Structured Student Engagement – Project is directly linked to course content.
  • Clearly articulated expectations and deliverables of the course service project for students
  • Critical student reflection integrated at multiple points during the course (connecting course experiences with their academic learning)

Once the Service-Learning committee has voted, it will be approved or rolled back. Either way, the committee will contact you to let you know the status of your designation. If your course is not initially approved: We will schedule a meeting with you to discuss how your course can be restructured to meet all CEL requirements. Fellows meet monthly in the spring and fall semester.

What is the Purpose of the Service-Learning Attribute

The attribute gives instructors an opportunity to highlight the integration of community-engaged learning pedagogies in their course descriptions. It also allows interested students to easily identify courses that incorporate community-engaged teaching experiences. In addition, the attribute provides valuable information on the number, scale, and frequency of community-engaged teaching and learning offerings, supporting the university’s ability to track and strengthen community-engaged teaching practices.
