UConn Wellness Library Collection
STEM Librarian Renee Walsh applied for Strategic Framework Library funding in the Fall of 2020 to launch the Wellness Library Collection. Before the pandemic, she noticed a need for accessible mental health information on campus, and the pandemic further highlighted that need. The collection began with purchasing accessible self-help, mental health, memoir, and non-fiction titles that addressed depression, mindfulness, eating well, and community. Eventually, the collection expanded to include sub-collections on LGBTQIA wellness, disability, sexual health, and other topics. In Spring 2022, Collection members hosted their first in-person event with student entrepreneur Allie Davenport. Attendees received free copies of Allie’s StarMind guide courtesy of the library. During Fall 2022, Renee hosted Nishelli Ahmed from SHaW for an event called “Destress with Mindfulness.” Meanwhile, the collection of books continues to grow, and members host one event in person per semester related to mental health and wellness. Current project staff members include Renee, Jennifer Chaput, and Chay Reed from the Avery Point campus library.
